A floor capable of producing solar energy was installed in Plaza de las Glorias in Barcelona, Spain. The expectation is that the floor can generate 7,560 kWh per year – equivalent to the energy consumption of three homes.

Installed in late April, the solar floor will be tested for six months. The idea is that initially the pavement can supply a public bicycle rental service. Meanwhile, a municipal commission assesses the potential of implementing the technology in other parts of Barcelona.

Among the product's advantages, the material is composed of recycled glass and plastic, maintenance is simpler (compared to roof-mounted solar panels), the design is modular and the solar technology integrates with the environment making efficient use of the public spaces.
